Wasinger Comments on Obama State of the Union

COTTONWOOD FALLS -- Today, Rob Wasinger, Republican candidate for Congress in the first district of Kansas and former chief-of-staff to Senator Sam Brownback, responded to the President's State of the Union speech:

"Ronald Reagan once warned us of the scariest words in the English language: 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help!' Unfortunately, that was the solemn theme of President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech. Last night the president doubled down on his failed policies of big government. He reiterated the same failed proposals to tax banks and investment, made a renewed call for job-killing regulations on our energy industry, and urged Congress to impose unpopular mandates on American's health care.

"We've heard this rhetoric before, during the campaign. Some may say it is powerful language. But smooth language should not cover over the essence of what President Obama said: More spending and more government. These failed policies of the past will not lead to a 21st Century of Prosperity for America.

"Obama and his liberal allies remain out of touch with middle America. They have not heeded the calls of those of us here in the heartland. Government is too big. We must shrink government, not grow it. Before we take on new spending, we must get our fiscal house in order. We're not opposed to spending on worthwhile programs, but we need to end the inefficient and failed programs of the past first. First things first. And as bad as the financial mess is on Wall Street, who among us in the heartland trusts northeast liberals Barney Frank and Chris Dodd to straighten out our financial system?

"Middle America needs more of a voice in Washington, and I am the candidate to take that voice to Washington where I will faithful represent our Kansas values and work to see them represented in the Federal laws of the land. I believe Congress must step back and listen to the people. In my travels all across western Kansas I have met thousands of hard working people who want a renewed focus on fixing our economy. To achieve prosperity we need the government off our backs. We need to put the government back to its proper, more limited role at every level.

"My campaign for Congress is based on common-sense solutions. We need to reduce government regulation, lower taxes, end wasteful spending, and commit to a strong national security. Restoring the public trust requires that we listen to the public interest. Instead of looking to the past, we need to look to the future and find ways to promote prosperity for our children and our grandchildren. I am confident that voters of the 'Big First' will join me in opposing the failed policies of big government and help me promote the common sense policies of limited government."
